The Thespian’s Guide to Acting Schools in New York

These are the facts and myths that most know or believe of the city:

New York is the city that never sleeps.

New York is one of the costliest places to live in.

New York is the center of the whole world.

New York is inhabited by people who love to love, hate, argue and haggle.

Now being a peace loving writer, I certainly shan’t argue about which one of those is true and which one isn’t. But if you’re a thespian in search for good acting schools, then you certainly won’t care about that. But you’d naturally care about the list that I’m about to provide below.

New York is a cosmopolitan city where a lot of good acting schools abound. In fact, if you truly are in search for excellent thespian education, New York isn’t a bad place to start. Naturally, the tuition fees of these acting schools are comparatively more expensive than the acting schools in your local state but they’re worth it. And if you’re looking for more proof, all you need is to do a little research work and I assure you that a lot of Hollywood big stars owe their talents to the very acting schools I’m about to enumerate.

Assuming that finances are not a problem for you, there’s just only other thing then to tackle: admissions. Several acting schools in New York are quite choosy when it comes to the students they’d let in their hallowed halls so to improve your chances of getting accepted, make sure that your school or the proper figures of authority furnish you with glowing recommendations. Neither does it hurt to have high GPAs to back you up.

With those two warnings then, here are some New York acting schools that you can try applying to.

ACTeen: Acting For Teen: Operating for almost three decades already, the ACTeen is the pioneering on-camera acting academy for teens, particularly those aged between thirteen to nineteen years old. If you or your child is serious about pursuing acting for a profession then you should consider contacting this particular acting school and view their curriculum. Besides learning everything about film and theater, students are also provided with a choice of over fifteen electives.

Ted Bardy Studio Inc. : To echo their tagline, this acting school provides their students with intense and personalized acting instruction. Everyone’s welcome to be a part of their workshop (limited to a small number to ensure personalized instruction), may it be amateurs, intermediate actors or professionals out to seek to improve their craft. The Ted Bardy Studio Inc. uses the Stanislavski / Meisner approach in guiding their students through their uniquely designed 3 phase program. Ted Bardy Studio Inc. is located in the Union Square section of New York City.

Actor Theater Workshop : ATW is a professional, non-profit theater company and under it, the Scott Acting Conservatory operates to train professional actors and have them realize original creative techniques to further improve their craft.

Lee Strasberg Theater Institute : this acting school hopes that the techniques of the acting legend, Lee Strasberg, continue to live on through their students.

East End Ensemble : A school that started two years ago as a local acting workshop set up in a private home and meant to improve the communication skills of their adult students. If you want to have fun while learning, this funky acting school may be what you’re looking for. East End Ensemble can be found in Brooklyn, New York.

Beyond Berklee college of music, what other schools offer a more contemporary style? I need back-ups!?

Although I am in the process of applying to Berklee, I am still searching for other schools that offer a course of study that suits my goals. I am highly opposed to the classical style of music taught by most conservatories. Are there other schools out there that offer a more contemporary style (not strictly jazz either) that I can consider?

Cornish Institute in Seattle may be to your liking – some great teachers there, as well as North Texas State and San Francisco State.

Hello From Chicago – Part 4 – A Personal Tour Of The Chicago Cultural Center

Chicago, Arlington House, Sunday, October 23, 2005, 6:15 am

Yesterday, after our lovely Austrian breakfast we went downtown to the Chicago Cultural Center, the main downtown information hub for tourists, to ask some questions about the Pullman Historic District, a planned industrial community, built in the 1880s by industrial magnate George Pullman, creator of the famous Pullman sleeper cars. We figured this would be an interesting place to visit since it brings together architecture, social and industrial history, and it would really give us insight into one of the most interesting personalities of Chicago’s history.

To get more information about this neighbourhood we talked to one of the volunteer greeters who staff the Chicago Cultural Center and offer their local expertise to visitors free of charge. The Chicago Greeter program today offers 150 greeters speaking 20 languages and the Greeter program is one of the best ways of getting to know the city through the eyes of a local resident.

As a matter of fact, I had registered electronically for a Chicago Greeter Tour prior to my departure, but something had gone wrong with my registration and as a result I was not assigned a greeter. The good thing is that the City of Chicago also offers “InstaGreeters” – local volunteers / experts who take people on downtown walking tours without the necessity of a prior registration.

This is how we happened upon our very own personal InstaGreeter tour: Chicago Greeter and local expert Don talked to us a bit about the Pullman Historic District, but the more we talked, and the more he saw that we were really interested, he asked us whether we wanted a 20 minute tour of the Chicago Cultural Center. Considering that this is a Chicago landmark we readily agreed.

The Chicago Cultural Center was originally dedicated in 1897 as the city’s original Public Library. It is an impressive limestone-faced building with intricate details, marble staircases, patterned ceilings, beautiful floor mosaics and two impressive stained glass domes. The cupola on the south side of the building is the world’s largest Tiffany stained-glass dome.

Today the Cultural Center houses one of the city’s Visitor Information Centers , various galleries, exhibition and meeting spaces, the Landmark Chicago Gallery which displays photographs from the permanent collection of Chicago landmarks, the 294-seat Claudia Cassidy Theater as well as the Studio Theater and various other facilities. You can even get married inside the Chicago Cultural Center.

Designed in the beaux-arts style by the Boston firm Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, the Chicago Cultural Center was completed in 1897 and dedicated as the city’s original Chicago Public Library. Completed at a cost of nearly $2 million, this remarkable monument was inspired by the neo-classical style of the World’s Columbian Exposition held in Chicago in 1893.

To start off, Don told us that the name of the city of Chicago is an Indian word for “stinky onion swamp”. He also explained that Chicago is a city of superlatives: 3 of the world’s 10 highest buildings are located here. Chicago is also widely considered to be the birthplace of modern architecture and a living museum of architecture, showcasing some of the world’s most famous architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, Daniel Burnham, Louis Sullivan, Mies van der Rohe and Frank Gehry.

Chicago likes to do everything big. The world’s largest public library is located here: the Harold Washington Library Center houses 2 million books. Chicago is also home to the largest building in the United States (excluding the Pentagon): the Merchandise Mart has 90 acres of floor space, housed in an Art Deco landmark. Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park is one of the world’s largest fountains. Chicago also has the only river in the world that flows backwards. Engineers reversed the Chicago River in 1900 for sanitary purposes. Here’s another interesting fact: Chicago also has the largest Polish population outside of Warsaw.

Our local expert Don took us through the building and showed us the two stained glass domes, the exhibit halls, the photo collection of Chicago landmarks, and to keep going along the line of superlatives, Don gave us a brief synopsis of Millennium Park, located right across Michigan Avenue from the Chicago Cultural Center. The idea for Millennium Park was conceived by famous mayor Richard M. Daley, and with the help of private sector donations Millennium Park has become one of the most impressive outdoor venues anywhere. The project cost $495 million, of which $220 million were financed privately.

Our Chicago Greeter Don, a former vice-president at Motorola, is very knowledgeable about the history of Chicago and very passionate about his city. His pride in his city is obvious, and there is a lot to be proud of. For me, Chicago’s waterfront including Grant Park, the lakefront trail and its beaches are some of the most awesome features of this city. In total Chicago has more than 7300 acres of parkland, 552 parks, 33 beaches, nine museums, two world-class conservatories, 16 historic lagoons, 10 bird and wildlife gardens, and it’s not surprising that Chicago has won numerous awards including “Best City in the World” and other accolades.

With Don’s help we got a great overview of the Cultural Center and a bit of insight into Chicago’s interesting history. It was the perfect preparation for our tour of the Pullman Historic District, an industrial community created by George Pullman, an industrial despot, yet a foresightful social entrepreneur who, according to Don, was universally despised.

Armed with a bit of background knowledge we were looking forward to our exploration of Pullman’s social experiment.

How does the dean of a music school leaving for another music school affect the school being left?

In other words, how important is the dean to a music conservatory? I heard recently that Douglas Lowry, the dean of the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) is leaving for the Eastman School of Music. How will this affect CCM? Will it make their reputation and prestige go down? Will it be harder to recruit new faculty of the same caliber as Lowry did?

Lowry’s departure will make no real difference at CCM. A new Dean will be hired, and students will notice no difference at all. CCM’s reputation will remain exactly the same (which is excellent).

Administrators, including Deans, are always moving around. This is normal.

And Deans have next to nothing to do with faculty recruiting, so this will not be affected at all either.

Clark College Orchestra to play with the Barron
Even though Ron Barron retired recently from the Boston Symphony after more than 30 years as the principal trombonist, he still wanted to make music. So he sent out a broadcast e-mail offering his services as a soloist that eventually crossed the country and reached one of his former New England Conservatory students, Don Appert. Besides being in charge of Clark College’s music department …

Conservatories and Building Regulations

Building a conservatory may require various permissions from the local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales. The two types of permission that householders will come across are building regulations and planning permission. This article looks at building regulations.

There are quite a few building regulations involved in constructing a conservatory, and homeowners need to be aware of this. However, if the conservatory is designed in a particular way then formal building regulations may not be required, saving the homeowner time and money.

In most cases conservatories, including sunrooms built on residential property are exempt from needing building regulations. A summary of exemption criteria for residential property according to Building Regulations 1991 include as follows:

oThe extension includes a roof that is completely transparent or translucent.

oThe extension walls are sufficiently glazed, and half of the area consists of windows. The roof must be glazed as well (at least three-quarters of it), with glass, polycarbonate sheets and similar translucent material.

oThe floor area must not exceed 30 square metres.

oThe extension is situated at ground level.

oIt has a door on it that separates it from the rest of the house.

oA heating system installed must be controllable, meaning it must contain an on and off switch.

oThe glazing requirements match the regulations of the UK, for glass.

oThe extension does not contain a sink, WC (bathroom) or washing machine.

An example of when building regulations are required is if the conservatory contains a kitchen. Usually the local area council can help people plan conservatories of this sort.

Some tips for building your conservatory can be found on the Internet, no matter what kind of conservatory it is, and whether or not a developer needs a permit. For instance, those building a conservatory may want to remember some flooring tips.

One tip that involves building the flooring of a conservatory is calculation of the floor area. The internal floor area should be calculated before ordered conservatory plans. The usually internal depth usually is 275 mm (10.5 inches) less than the external depth, while the internal width is usually (550 cm) 21 inches less than external width-if the builder uses a cavity wall construction. This measurement should be taken as carefully and accurately as possible for a building to receive the correct plan for the project.

Usually measurement with a few stakes and some string will help. If a builder needs help, especially if they are not a professional, they may want to contact a local potential supplier in the area for help. In addition, the stake-and-string markings should remain in the ground until all supplier quotes are sought. This will help an amateur builder to have the best quality work done for the least amount of money.

Those who do not want to build or plan their own conservatories can receive help from professional conservatory companies and remodeling experts, as well as architects. The professional conservatory companies or architects are the ones who plan the conservatory project, and the builders are the ones who will construct the conservatory unit.

It is important for those want to add a conservatory to their home or other establishment to choose someone that will know all the rules and regulations involved in building one of these extensions.

Has anyone had a wedding in Central Park?

I would really love to get married in Central Park this August in the Conservatory Garden, but I know there are a lot of restrictions (no music, runners, chairs) Is it worth it? I’m hoping someone has recently gotten married there and can give me some insight. Thanks!

Make a list of what you MUST have in your wedding and contact them asking for their restrictions/ policies on each. See how flexible they are:

Conservatory Of Recording Arts ?

I live in Maryland and I’m wondering if anyone out there has attended or knows anyone who has attended the Conservatory Of Recording Arts and can give me more specified details about this school because it’s located in Arizona that’s real far from Maryland on the other side of the United States actually and I’m wondering if it’s worth going all the way from Maryland to Arizona for audio engineering knowing there are closer audio engineering schools a few in Florida New York DC and even 1 in Maryland 35 mins away from me however when I called and was asking them questions about it they had a nonchalant attitude when I called Conservatory Of Recording Arts they told me alot of info it was highly convincing and it sound really good music is where my heart is and I wanna make the right decision before I just up and move all the way to Arizona.

Here’s my two cents: If you feel that the Arizona school might be better, ask them for a few names of present and former students. Call or write them and get some first-hand impressions. OR… you can get yourself to Arizona and tour the place. Worse case scenario is that you are out the cost of travel and that’s only if you decide not to go. The cost of the trip is an INVESTMENT in your future, don’t sellyourself short. Best of luck whatever you choose to do.
