Is it possible to reverse a steel exterior door so that it will open from the opposite side? What is involved?

Woodwork involved? Re-drilling?
How do I fill the old hole where
the handle and deadbolt used to be?
What material to use, etc.

Yes it can be done!
You will have to remove the slab and hardware(hinges and strikes)
Transfer all the mortise locations to the opposite jambs(this must be precise)
Make the new mortises and fill the old ones with “Bondo”
Most steel residential slabs are through mortised for the hinges. If this one is not, you will have to also do this so the hinges can be reversed.
If you`re extremely security conscience, you should also remove the oval insert and reverse it also. This can be a very difficult abd tedious job, are you sure you really want to do it?

we bought a pre-hung feather river fiberglass entry door. its jamb is tan primed. can it be stained?

if it can still be stained, do i need to sand it again and what color will i use to match the door (medium oak color)?

1. You can use a solid color stain, but it will look like paint. You will see the texture of the wood but have no variation in color.
2. If you want a more standard stain look, you will need to sand or strip off the primer before you stain the wood (if the frame is wood, if this too is fiberglass refer to options 1 or 3).
3. If you have patience…you could try using a gel stain over the primed wood or fiberglass. This can take awhile to dry and requires a clear coat to protect the finish, but you will have to play around with your application technique to get your desired look.

Information on a door above the main entrance door on a house ?

I’ve seen a house, and a few others that have a door, that is directly above the main entrance door. The door is on the second floor of the house, and goes no where, there is no balcony, just goes straight to the lower roof part. It’s generally found on really old houses. My mother told me that it was a superstition of some sort, where it was made to let “the spirits out.”
Can anyonr confirm this, or give more information on it?

Closet Organizing For Kids

Do you have a child? Does he have a bedroom? With a closet?

Are you afraid to go in there?

Relax! Closet organizing is not just a topic for adults. After all, if you could get your child to keep her closet organized, you could get her to…rule the world. See? This is good stuff.

Successful closet organizing for your child is based on the same ideas you would use in your own closet.

– Everything has its place.

– Everything is accessible.

– Get rid of what you don’t use.

– Use tools and accessories to prevent clutter.

For maximum effectiveness, I suggest you organize your closet with your child working alongside you. While you have the final say in all decisions, a child that has some input will bring cooperation to the process and undoubtedly will have some vital pieces of information to contribute.

Your child needs to tell you how she likes to use her closet. Lots of hanging clothes? Toys stored in the closet? Need more shelving? Tiny items that need to be sorted?

If your young sweetie can’t see the point in this domestic exercise, you can try pointing out that an organized closet will save him time and energy. But, at the end of the day, you may simply have to play the Big Card.

“Because I said so”, is the parent’s reason of choice and always plays well with “the buck stops here”.

Once that’s settled, here are the quick steps to use during this closet organizing session with your child.

1. Take a good long look.

The first step is to open those closet doors wide and see what’s really in there. Can’t see the back or the floor? Then everything should come out.

Yes, this is the part of the process for the strong and the mighty. Steel yourself. Unclaimed food nestled in the back corner of the closet will NOT make you and your child feel closer.

2. Get rid of what’s broken, moldy, out-of-date, or no longer used or wanted.

As always, recycle usable items to a local charity. Be sure and include your child in this important step of community involvement.

3. Assess what’s left.

This is where you both decide what needs to get hung up, folded and shelved, put in bins and baskets, or archived to a better place.

4. Make a list and shop for the organizing accessories you need. Together.

Or use cardboard boxes and customize (including decorating) to your kiddo’s satisfaction. This is the fun part!

5. Put everything in its place.

You are not done with your closet organizing until EVERYTHING has a place. Everything. Period.

6. Allot ten minutes a day to KEEP everything in its place in this newly organized closet.

This is the crucial step. If you don’t enforce this, you might as well not even start in the first place. The truth is, this part is called ‘discipline’ and most kids aren’t born with any. But they need it and you can teach it to them. You’ll find this is a fantastic opportunity to do so.

If necessary (and it probably will be), your child may need help seeing the value of keeping their closet in perfect working order.

– Do they like to socialize with their friends?

Then they put in their ten minutes (or thirty seconds if they get practiced) of clean-up time every day.

– Do they enjoy some free time?

Have they done their ten minutes?

– Do they look forward to other privileges?

Is everything in its place each and every day?

This is simply a new habit and like all habits, takes a bit of time and practice to master. Give your child the opportunity to feel terrific about themselves by tackling a closet organizing session with them. It may just inspire you to go take a peek in your own closets!

How do I keep my dog off the screen door?

My boyfriend and I both have dogs and during the day they stay in the back yard. Whenever my dog sees someone enter the living room through the door, she jumps up on the screen and scratches at it. Guide to Ordering Custom Closets Online

Ordering anything online can be a little scary, and ordering a custom product can be even more challenging. Here are a few suggestions to make ordering custom closets online a little easier and more secure.

1. Get familiar with your closet layout. Take exact measurements of each wall including the height of each wall. If the ceiling height varies in your closet, determine exactly where the change occurs. For wall widths, take measurements at both the floor level and at the highest level you can reach, and if you want to be extra careful take measurements mid-way. You’ll want to use the smallest of these measurements when designing your closet, since this is the most restrictive dimension.

2. Make a simple sketch of your closet using a heavy lead pencil or pen and notate the measurements of each wall. You don’t necessarily need to make your sketch to scale, but that would help you understand the potential of your closet.

3. Now that you have a sketch of your closet’s layout start thinking about a logical floor plan. When designing your floor plan be realistic about the size of your space and any obstacles in your closet. Most people tend to over design a closet space in a effort to maximize storage area. Don’t make a plan that blocks a door from swinging completely open or would create a cramped space. Better to move items to another storage area than create a tight and difficult closet. Remember that hanging clothes need at least 24 inches of depth and the minimum shelf depth for folded clothes is 12 inches.

4. When you have your closet floor plan finished begin assessing what type of articles you need to store in your closet and how much space you need for each type. Most people need more space for hanging clothes followed by folded clothes, shoes, purses and dirty laundry respectively. Determine if you want to have drawers in your closet and how many you need. Having drawers in your closet can free-up additional space in your bedroom.

5. Now that you have a rough ideal what you are going to store and how you are going to store it, it’s time to create your closet design. The best way to do that is to find an online design program that can can design your closet to-scale. Several closet companies have online design programs geared to their individual products. Some of these online programs are very complicated and take some time to learn, but there are also some easy to use programs.

6. You need to design your closet one wall at a time. However, you also need to consider how the designs on each wall will meet at the corners, in walk-in closets. Some online design programs don’t connect closets at the corners because of style of the product they offer. It’s better to use companies that offer closet systems that utilize all of your closet space including the corners. After you find a program that you like start designing.

7. Some professional designer tips:

Try to create a balanced and visually appealing design. You’re investing your time and money, be sure you like the finished product.

Locate drawers at the center of your closet design, directly across from the door so they are the first thing you see when entering the closet. Drawers make a good visual focal point and they typically need the extra clearance provided by the central location.

Use the corners for hanging space not shelves. Corner shelves are sometimes too deep and clothes get lost, but corners work well for hanging clothes.

Don’t underestimate how much space you require for hanging clothes, and don’t plan too much area for long hanging. With today’s fashions most people don’t need more than 12 to 24 horizontal inches of long hanging space.

8. Now that you have the perfect closet design let’s talk about the products available online.

The Material- Almost all of the online closet companies use particle board with a melamine laminate veneer finish. Particle board is a very versatile and inexpensive material primarily used for the manufacture of low-end furniture. Unfortunately, particle board can also be brittle and vulnerable to moisture. The only company currently offering an alternative material is Speedy Closet Organizer. These components are constructed using MDF (medium density fiberboard) over a real wood frame. This is the same type of system used for the doors in your home. The system is very strong and highly resistant to moisture. All online closet companies use a melamine veneer as the surface material. Keep in mind the quality of melamine varies from the paper thin stuff you see on the cheap furniture from big box retailers, to high impact resistant melamine that looks and feels like real wood.

Closet Systems- Most of the online closet companies offer very similar style closet systems. These systems are usually held together using plastic fasteners and are hung on the wall like a kitchen cabinet without doors and the shelves are typically adjustable.
