Our Lives Impacted By Amish Goods

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

It is true that the Amish have a different way of life and different outlook on the world than most of the people in the world today. However, if we take a look at many of the things that they emphasize in their way of life and the products that they produce, we will find that we can and already do make use of many of them.

There isn’t one suburban town that lacks an Amish gazebo. Any suburb of New York, whether in north or central New Jersey or Connecticut a classic Amish gazebo is always the center piece of a town park or grass area.

In most cases, these town gazebos are quite large and can fit a small band in them. This is why they make a great scene for town dinner and dancing events for the public.

Although this is not exactly what the Amish intended when they created these gazebos, this kind of behavior is still in the spirit of the Amish because it brings people together in a happy sort of way.

The Amish wooden garden shed is another example of a classic Amish item that made its way into American culture. These sheds are generally built for the purpose of storing all kinds of tools for wood and metalworking, which, of course, is definitely in the spirit of the Amish, as they believe strongly in the importance of craftsmanship.

They have become very popular in areas where more space is available for building and for working homes and fields. They are also built with traditional Amish craftsmanship, which is sturdy enough to last through even the worst kind of stores.

The Amish wooden garden shed is also in the spirit of the Amish in that it promotes the idea of individual work and not relying on others for fixing one’s problems. It also allows the simpleton to do work and dissuades one from resorting to big cranes and machinery.

There are other Amish products that have a tremendous impact on our society such as the classic Amish quilt, which is generally hand sown by around four to five hard working Amish women. Others use Amish chicken coops that farmers until this day still use. These have all had a tremendous impact on our society and way of life.

Raizy Myers is an Amish historian and Amish products analyst. For more information about where to purchase wooden gazebos and chicken coops view My Amish Goods online. Raizy is an SEO specialist working at SEO services group ClickResponse.

Should You Build A Lean To Carport?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Carports that need to fit properly in a limited space can usually only be a lean to carports which is also called single slope carports or a flat roof carports. When choosing a carport that is attached to your house you might want to consider a single slope carport (lean to carports). If the only practical location for your carport is adjacent to your house or another existing structure such as a storage building then you might find yourself limited in the type of carport you are able to build.

Sometimes multi slope carports don’t work for many reasons. A major reason is appearances. The delineation between house and carport should not be clearly marked or it will look like the carport is not an integral part of your house. You want your home and carport to look as though they blend together as one. A carport that looks glued to the side of your house will not bring any long term satisfaction. Another reason related to functionality of the roof line. If you live in an area that has a great deal of annual snow fall you will want to make sure that the snow or ice will not gather between your house and the carport. In the spring thaw, the runoff melted snow and water will need a clear and direct path to escape to the ground. You do not want the water from the melted ice to puddle against your home. Exposing your masonry work to standing water is an expensive mistake.

Lean to carports or single slope car carports tend to look more blended into the home than a flat roof carport. If the roof line pitches march then the two roofs look like they are meant to be together. The same roofing material can be used and the pitch of the roof can be matched exactly. Even a slightly different pitch can look awkward and take away from the appearance of your home. If you are considering adding a carport that has a roof at a different pitch or angle than the roof on your home do yourself a favor. Take a picture of your current home and print off two copies of it. Make sure you know what you are getting and what it will look like before starting the carport construction.

Flat roof carports have one distinct advantage over other types of carports. A flat roof carport can be used as a deck or a screened in porch. For some people a flat roof carport provides an irresistible advantage. Changing a second story window into a doorway is a reasonably inexpensive and simple task. A contractor could probably do the job in a few days. In order to support a deck or any type of second story structure the supporting posts in the carport would need to be able to be strong enough to handle an extra load. An experienced contractor would be able to help you figure out the new load.

You don’t need to make the roof into a second story bedroom immediately or even build a door to allow access. You can always add this later. However, if you think you might use the top of the flat roof as the base of another story then you need to calculate the potential load and build the supporting posts accordingly.

In conclusion, think seriously about what type of carport roof is suitable for your family. Consider location and purpose. Once the carport is constructed you will have to look at it for a long time. A lean to carport or a single slope carport might suit your needs best.

Wood Carports Can Increase Your House Equity With Low Cost

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Building a wooden carport has many advantages that you might not have realized. Other than providing covered storage for any type of items, most commonly your car or truck, a carport built with the style of your house in mind can really improve the value of your property. Because building with wood is so flexible, you can fashion your carport with any type or period of contemporary architecture to complement the style of your existing structures.

Carports are essentially a covered, non-closed in structure built close to or attached to your house – most often used to protect vehicles from the elements. But housing your car, motorcycle, truck or recreational vehicle are not the only reasons you may want to build a carport. Since they are not closed in, carports are very quick and economical to build. You might decide to build a carport simply for added outdoor covered space, such as a side porch or outdoor dining room.

A quick internet search for carports will mostly result in metal carport kits that can be ordered online and shipped within days. It is more difficult to find a wooden carport kit online. However, it is possible to find plans for a wooden carport online. Many companies can email plans within hours of receiving payment. These plans are all certified by engineers. As long as you follow the plan carefully you will have a structurally sound carport.

If you have some building experience, then you may not even need to order plans online. If you do some research and find some good images that you think would suit your house style, simply save the picture, and design a plan from that. You will want to have your plan verified with an engineer to make sure that it meets local building codes. If you won’t be building the carport yourself, then you might just be able to give the picture and dimensions to a good local contractor, and they will be able to engineer and build your car port.

There are some metal carports that actually resemble wood. This type of carport is built with 6 by 6 metal legs that resemble timber legs. The finishing work on this type of carport tends to be a little less ornate than that found on real wooden ones. There are advantages and disadvantages to this type of structure. The major disadvantage commonly mentioned is the lack of a construction project feel. Lots of guys relish the idea of getting out the table saw and hammering a few nails. This type of experience is lost if building with pre-formed metal.

Carports are making a big splash at home improvement shows all over the country. There are a lot of contractors discovering a big demand for the product. Wooden carports are the most popular as this type of carport has a classic feel and can add real value to your home.

Garage Door Prices – It’s Better To Shop Around

Monday, December 7th, 2009

There are numerous factors governing the fluctuation in prices of garage doors. That is to say, if you’re installing the door yourself, you’re saving yourself double the amount. Likewise, you’ll have to pay more if you use a high wind rated garage door, or if your door has a different size. The material of the door greatly influences price hikes too. Usually, you can get a garage door ranging from $300-$3000.

Given below are some of the common garage door prices:

$300-$500 (not installed) – An average 16′x7′ door. This price range does not include installation prices, and may even get you a door with steel clad and added insulation. A manual for installation will be provided with the door, and all it takes to install it is 2-3 professionals and some common tools.

$400-$700 (installed) – a new 16′x7′ tilt-up or rolling up wood or aluminum door with outside plywood. Aluminum single tilt garage doors are very lightweight, and they do not rust. However, they dent easily. These types of garage door prices include professional installation.

$600-$700 (installed) – Including professional installation, a garage door in this price range is a cheaper but new 16′x7′ non-insulated one.

$750-$1,200 (installed) – Including installation prices, this range can get you a solid steel door. You can get a single skin thinner metal door in lesser price, and also a double steel panel with insulation in between for a higher price. If you’re willing to pay more, you can even get one with steel two inches thicker than regular doors, and with added weather resistance. Although steel dents easily too and makes repairing difficult, it does not rust easily. Also, steel doors do not require repainting as often as wooden doors do.

$800-$1,000 (installed) – Affordable professional installation along with a new 16′x7′ designed-to-be-painted sectional roll up insulated door.

$1,200-$2,000 (installed) – Inclusive of professional installation, this category of garage door prices can get you a 16′x7′ standard higher-grade roll-up stained wood door panel. This price may go up or down depending upon any additional designs on the panel, or the type of wood used.

$1,200 (installed) – a larger 16′x8′ good quality steel garage door that has panels constructed of two steel panels that sandwich 2 inches of polyurethane foam with a pre-painted low maintenance exterior. These garage door prices include installation.

$1,300 (installed) – measuring 16′x7′, this price offers a high wind rated garage door inclusive of installation costs.

$2,500-$3,000 (installed) – a new custom-built wood door. Wood is popular because of its natural look and style. However, wood doors require regular maintenance, since it may start cracking and warping with age. These high garage door prices may also be caused by the irregular size of the door, such as a high end oversize”x8′ door with a motor. Price includes professional installation.

Garage door prices are influenced by many factors, and the best way to find out about such prices is to shop for garage doors first.
