Building A Wooden Garden Shed? 5 Tips To Get Started The Right Way

Saturday, June 19th, 2010

Finally getting that shed built in your back yard? It’ll make a real difference having a place to organize all those garden tools and fertilizers. Not to mention all the extra space you will free up in your garage.

Before you set out to build your shed here are some tips.

1.Do you need a permit? This should probably be your first step, after you have decided where to build the shed. Permits can take some time to get approved so get that done in a timely fashion. Could you build without a permit, just hoping no one will know? You could… but it can also get costly. Getting the permit is just the best plan.

2.What is your skill level? Have you built stuff before? Building something above your skill level can be a really frustrating project. If you want to go above your own capabilities, it is certainly possible to hire someone for some specific aspects of the shed building project.

3.What type, and what size should the shed be? We recommend you really thing through the size aspect. You are only going to build this one time, so might as well make it something that will work for you for years to come. Should you build a wooden shed? Get a metal shed? A wooden shed looks more classy, obviously, and may better blend in with your garden and your home. There is also great flexibility when building a wooden shed and it can be painted and designed to match your current theme.

4.Make sure to have a great blueprint. Plans for how to build a shed can be found on the internet. Some can be quite costly, others are so inexpensive it almost make you wonder… Do you need a plan that will show you step by step how to lay out the work? Something that has easy, laid out information on the supplies needed? Do you need pictures and videos to guide you? Or maybe you just need the actual blueprint itself? Before purchasing a plan, make sure it fits your needs.

5.Do you have the tools required for the job? Not having the right tools can cause an absolute nightmare. Power tools can be rented from your local hardware store. Usually for very little money. With a bit if planning you can minimize the time you need to rent the tools, but do rent them if you don’t already own them.

Having a great plan, not just the blueprint but also how to do the job, what tools to rent, what aspects you need to hire help for can make your shed building project something both fun and something you can be proud of.

Buying The Perfect Storage Shed

Saturday, May 8th, 2010

Many people will buy or build a shed for a lot of different reasons. They will be used to store garden equipment such as mowers, edgers, trimmers, etc.. Or it can be used to remove clutter from your garage. Or maybe perhaps a workshop or work space. They can be purchased in many designs and dimensions to fit any needs you will require.

A shed has is a very simple design. Most likely it will be set on a concrete base or on a skid foundation made of wood. Check with your building department to determine what you are allowed to build.

Adding details such as windows, trim, doors, and shingles can turn an ordinary shed into a beautiful structure. You can make an ordinary shed look stunning just by adding some simple details.

The way you intend to use this space as well as choosing a design to blend with your home or landscape will be things to consider. Will it be used as a storage, or a work place? Perhaps a combination of both, part work space and part storage. Take your time when choosing the right design and size.

The first thing to consider will be size. Figure out what size shed you will be able to fit into your property. To get an image of the size you will need to find out what you will be putting inside, for example outdoor furniture, bikes, grills, etc.. If however you will be using this space as a work area, make sure you leave plenty of room to move around comfortably. Having light and electricity might as well be required. If you are going to be using this space as a small workshop you well want to place extra attention to the location you pick. Keep in mind that south facing windows will bring in very nice sunlight, but may also produce to much heat.

Some of the basics shapes to choose from will be, gable, lean-to, salt box, hip, and the barn style. The gable roof is the most common, it has two even roof tops that form a triangle. The barn design shed has a roof with two sloped pitches on each side. A lean-to shed has a single sloping roof. A hip shed has a roof that slopes down in four directions from the top.

Shed kits are available in many different materials. For low maintenance a vinyl shed can be ideal. Some of the advantages of having vinyl is that it will not rot like wood, or rust like metal. A wood shed on the other hand is very strong and sturdy, it can handle wind and snow loads very will. You can as well match a wood shed to your home by painting it and adding shingles. If you don’t want to spend to much money, a metal shed can be more affordable than wood or vinyl. If you are buying a metal shed you will want to be will informed on the warranty it carries against rust. These sheds will last many years just by doing the proper maintenance when required.

Our Lives Impacted By Amish Goods

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

It is true that the Amish have a different way of life and different outlook on the world than most of the people in the world today. However, if we take a look at many of the things that they emphasize in their way of life and the products that they produce, we will find that we can and already do make use of many of them.

There isn’t one suburban town that lacks an Amish gazebo. Any suburb of New York, whether in north or central New Jersey or Connecticut a classic Amish gazebo is always the center piece of a town park or grass area.

In most cases, these town gazebos are quite large and can fit a small band in them. This is why they make a great scene for town dinner and dancing events for the public.

Although this is not exactly what the Amish intended when they created these gazebos, this kind of behavior is still in the spirit of the Amish because it brings people together in a happy sort of way.

The Amish wooden garden shed is another example of a classic Amish item that made its way into American culture. These sheds are generally built for the purpose of storing all kinds of tools for wood and metalworking, which, of course, is definitely in the spirit of the Amish, as they believe strongly in the importance of craftsmanship.

They have become very popular in areas where more space is available for building and for working homes and fields. They are also built with traditional Amish craftsmanship, which is sturdy enough to last through even the worst kind of stores.

The Amish wooden garden shed is also in the spirit of the Amish in that it promotes the idea of individual work and not relying on others for fixing one’s problems. It also allows the simpleton to do work and dissuades one from resorting to big cranes and machinery.

There are other Amish products that have a tremendous impact on our society such as the classic Amish quilt, which is generally hand sown by around four to five hard working Amish women. Others use Amish chicken coops that farmers until this day still use. These have all had a tremendous impact on our society and way of life.

Free Guide On How To Arc Weld

Monday, January 18th, 2010

Learn how to arc weld with this FREE guide. Arc welding is often attempted by many home handymen in the workshop or home garage. It can be a bit daunting at first for many people, especially if they have never tried doing this before. This guide will h

First things first we must start with the safety. You’re going to need to firstly get yourself a pair of welding gloves, ideally a 100% leather full length glove is best. These usually come up to just before your elbow and offer greater protection as they cover more of your arms. To protect the rest of your upper body wear a very thick heavy duty workshop type shirt. Cotton drill material is often used for work shirts so this would be a good material to look for in a work shirt. The same goes for your pants as you want something strong and heavy duty, usually a pair of jeans work well for this.

When you are welding there is often spatter and hot sparks flying around all over the place. I have learned the hard way by not wearing fully enclosed footwear. I have burnt myself many times from just using sandals and flip-flops. Please use fully enclosed leather work boots to protect the tops of your feet from the hot welding spatter. Welding and grinding go hand in hand so you are also going to need some protective eyewear and some earplugs. Get a full face shield mask because just using safety glasses won’t protect the rest of your face.

Finally you’re going to need to get yourself a welding helmet. A standard flip up helmet will do the job okay, but personally I suggest investing in an auto darkening welding helmet. They are more expensive than the standard type helmets but they certainly do make it easy particularly for the learner to arc weld.

Before you start getting carried away and start welding, make sure that you clean down everywhere that you want to weld first. This means grinding off any rust or paint and any other contaminants such as oil and grease. These impurities on the metal will give you all sorts of grief when you’re trying to arc weld.

Now for the welding electrode to use. I would suggest that you use a 6013 rod as these are very easy to use. They can be bought anywhere and they are able to be used in all positions. These may also be labelled as a GP rod which means general purpose. On the back of the packet there will be instructions telling you how many amps you need to use for this particular sized welding electrode.

Now we can connect the earth clamp to the metal you plan on welding. For the best chance of getting a good arc started grab some metal clamps so that you can hold down the metal you are going to weld to your bench. This will stop it from moving around when you are striking the arc.

Starting the arc. The best method is what is called the scratch technique. This involves you dragging the electrode across the surface of the metal until it starts sparking. Once it starts sparking the idea is to stop moving and keep the spark going. Practice this first as once you can establish an arc you’ll be right to lay down an arc welding bead.

Stringer bead. The next step is to make a stringer bead, which is simply just a continuous weld bead in a straight line. Follow on from striking the arc in the one spot by leaning the electrode over about 15-16 degrees towards the way you want to make the bead. Then slowly move along, keeping the rod about 1/8 of an inch above the base metal (3mm). Do this until you have burnt up a stack of rods. You need to be confident with this.

Remember practise makes perfect. This was an introduction to arc welding on how to arc weld.
