I recently broke the glass shade part of a tall floor lamp (the torchiere part). The lamp still works so I don’t want to buy a whole new one.

How do I make a table lamp weatherproof for use outdoors? I am making it from scratch.?

I have seen retail outdoor lamps with a protective glass covering over the bulb area, to keep water away from the electrical parts of the lamp, along with a weatherproof lampshade.

You can’t (or at least you shouldn’t); here’s why:

In order for a lamp to be rated or listed for use in a wet location, it undergoes rigorous testing by a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory (NRTL). Then, the manufacturing process is monitored by that NRTL, and the manufacturer is allowed to place the Mark of the NRTL on the product. One of the better known NRTLs is Underwriters Laboratories, Inc; most people are familiar with the UL Mark on a product, although most people who notice it don’t really understand what it means.

The National Electrical Code requires any electrical fitting, device, luminaire, or appliance to be “listed”. This means that product is placed on a list of similar products that have also been proven to meet Product Standards that have been created in order to provide safe products for consumer use. This is an over-simplified explanation; but the end result is that using an electrical product that is not listed (or using a product in a manner contrary to its listing) puts the user at risk of injury or death.

Most insurance companies will not pay claims for damages caused by non-listed products.

Buy a listed lamp, it will be worth the cost to you. Without a listing, there is no way to prove a product is safe, short of paying thousands of dollars for a field evaluation.

You can replace blinds with the wood faux blinds they go up almost the same way. As for paint just pick one wall and paint it a color you like. A nice accent wall can give room a warm look

Boring Dining Room Layout? not Neccessarily

Some of us may be enterprising enough to change the look of our interiors every now and then. Others may not be so, and may be comfortable with the same look over several years. While familiarity with the layout of your rooms may allow you functional continuity, the feeling of freshness that accompanies a change of setting is well worth the extra effort put in.

So how do you go about revamping that antique look of your rooms that has been around for as long as you can remember? Let’s start with the place of all daily family get-togethers – the Dining Room. A place which is regularly used several times a day by your family as well as any guests you may have. The fun and pleasure of doing up your dining room is well rewarded by the increased quality time spent in ambivient surroundings.

The first thing to do is to make a plan. Don’t try to memorize everything, and make a scaled drawing. It will give you a holistic view of your plan, and make it easier to discuss with others.

Looking at the space available will give you a broad idea of arranging your dining room furniture. Also see the variety of furniture pieces you have available for arrangement – Dining table, dining room chairs, dining table pad etc.

The size of the table should be adequate to allow seating your entire family at one go as far as possible. Some large families may have to lay out the food twice. Generally most family dining tables come in sizes with even seating capacity – two, four, six, eight or more. Assuming you have the right size, plan to leave enough space around to allow free movement. A couple of feet is the bare minimum for comfortable passage, and more may be left if you have a larger sized room.

The placement of the chairs is another place which allows you scope for experimentation. The typical dining room table has four or six side chairs pushed up to it and two armchairs at the ends, but you can break the mold by moving the armchairs elsewhere, perhaps flanking a window or sideboard.

Place a drop-leaf table near the window sill for those extra guests or for the kids to have their own little corner meal once in a while.

Use cloth covers to cover the dining chairs for that touch of elegance. Wash and re-use when they get dirty, or buy new ones when the old ones get worn out. They come pretty cheap for the ambience they provide, and are widely available at most general stores.

Add some interesting lighting. Instead of using the plain vanilla glass lampshade, dig out that exotic paper or traditional cloth one you picked up during your last holiday. Combine it with a low wattage diffused light, and it will add a dash of color and romance to your setting.

Re-arrange some of the smaller furniture items like the side tables, lamp stands etc to give a new look and feel to the whole place.

So don’t just sit there reading this article. Get up and get cracking to surprise yourself and your family!
